The existing playground is a small linear space located at the backyard of the school. A large concrete block wall holds the schoolyard on fill and separates the yard from the neighboring row houses. The space is coated in poured-in-place rubber surfacing, has many metal climbing structures strewn throughout the space. Due to the shade thrown from surrounding buildings and walls, the safety surface has a heavy coating of moss in many places. There is a large Latinx population at the school, so universal play themes and subtle inclusion of English characters are important objectives. The design scheme includes new play structures on new safety surface tiles, centrally located in the Tricycle Track painted on concrete. The tricycle theme incorporates typical streetscape elements, including crosswalks, lane separation lines, and parking spaces. Painted games on the concrete encourage proprioceptive stimulation. The new play structure has many activities to encourage vestibular, tactile, olfactory, and visual stimulation.
